Laparoscopic Gastrectomy for Advanced Gastric Cancer
Published online: Surg Endosc. 20 April 2021.
Introduction: These benefits as well as the oncological safety of laparoscopic gastrectomy have been clearly demonstrated for early gastric cancer. Several studies demonstrated the safety, feasibility and oncological value of laparoscopic gastrectomy compared with open gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer, but most of the data comes from Eastern high-volume referral centers. At present, limited reports from the Western institutions have been published. The aim of this study is to analyze short- and long-term results of Laparoscopic Gastrectomy for Advanced Gastric Cancer in a real-life Western practice.
Materials and methods: Total number of 366 cases of laparoscopic gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy for advanced gastric cancer performed from January 2005 to December 2019, at seven different surgical departments in Italy and Serbia, were analysed.
Conclusion: Laparoscopic radical gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer is feasible and safe in the general practice of Western institutions when performed by trained surgeons.
